How to install the BlackBerry Desktop Manager

You can install the BlackBerry Desktop Manager in two ways: by uploading the software from the CD that came with your handheld device, or by downloading the software from the internet.

Installing BlackBerry Desktop Manager from CD

  1. Insert the BlackBerry software installation CD into the CD-ROM drive on your PC or laptop.
  2. In your Windows taskbar, click on 'Start' and then select 'Run'. A new window will appear.
  3. In the 'Open' text field, type the following: d:\setup.exe (d should be the name of your CD drive).
  4. Click 'OK'.

Downloading BlackBerry Desktop Manager from the internet

You can download the Blackberry software direct from the BlackBerry website. When you've reached the BlackBerry website, follow these steps:

  1. From the drop down box select Blackberry Desktop Software v4.0 and click 'next'.
  2. Select 'download'
  3. Fill in the online form and click 'next'
  4. When prompted, agree to the terms and conditions and click 'next'
  5. Save .exe download file to your desktop.
  6. Go to your desktop and double click on the .exe file to start the installation. Then follow these steps:
  • If the Choose Setup Language dialog box appears, select a language, and then select 'OK'.
  • Click 'next' to begin the installation.
  • Select your country and click 'next'.
  • Read the license agreement carefully and agree to the terms by clicking 'yes'.
In the User Name and Company Name fields, type your name and your company's name and click 'next'.
  • Now you must select the integration option that you want to apply to this installation. To receive email messages on your handheld, you must integrate your handheld with an email account during the installation process by choosing one of the following setup options:
    • BlackBerry Internet Email: Use this option if you are using the BlackBerry Internet Solution and want to receive email from an Internet service provider email account.
    •  BlackBerry Enterprise Server or BlackBerry Desktop Redirector: Use this option if you are using the BlackBerry Enterprise Solution to receive email from your corporate Microsoft Outlook or Lotus Notes email account. If you use Microsoft Outlook, ask your system administrator whether a BlackBerry Enterprise Server, or BlackBerry Desktop Redirector will redirect your email messages.
  • Select the best option and click 'next'.
  • Accept the default location for the desktop software
  • Accept the default folder name for the desktop software
  • Select if you want the BlackBerry Desktop Software shortcuts to be availible to anyone who logs onto your computer.
  • Select the check boxes beside any additional shorcut options you want installed on your computer.
  • When setup is complete you can open the README.txt file and run the desktop software immediatley. Click 'Finish' to close the window.

Integrating and finishing up

To complete the desktop software setup there is also one change we need to make on the handheld.

  1. Go to the front screen of your handheld. Scroll through the icon’s to the messages icon using the track-wheel and press the track-wheel. This will take you into the message screen.
  2. Once in the message screen press the track-wheel. This will bring up a menu on the right-hand side of the screen
  3. Scroll through this menu to ‘options’ and press the track-wheel. This will bring you to a Message list options menu
  4. Scroll down to ‘Delete On’. If this reads ‘Desktop & Handheld’ do not change, however if this reads ‘Handheld only’, press the space bar to change to ‘Desktop & Handheld’.
  5. Press the track-wheel. A menu will appear on screen.
  6. Scroll to ‘save’ on this menu and press the track-wheel.

This completes our recommendations for desktop software and handheld settings -- but you can also personalise how you receive information on your BlackBerry.
