Data roaming spend caps

To make it easier for you to control costs when you access email or the internet from abroad, we have introduced spend caps and spend notifications for data roaming.

When roaming in the EU, you take your home tariff abroad and will only receive these spend notifications when you have exceeded your plan allowances.
For all other regions you will get notifications whenever you are roaming.

How do the spend caps work?

When roaming in the EU, you will now be able to use your plan as you would at home. Only when you exceed your plan's data allowance will you receive a text message – well before you reach your monthly spend cap – telling you how much you've spent on data roaming outside of your plan. When you reach the spend cap, you will receive another text notifying you of this.

When roaming anywhere outside of the EU, you will be roaming as normal and will receive a text message-before you reach the spend cap of how much you've spent on roaming so far, and another message when you reach the spend cap.

The text message will be sent to your mobile phone inbox, or to the SMS inbox on your MBB dashboard.

What are the spend caps?

There are two monthly spend caps of €50 and €300 (ex VAT).

The €50 spend cap equates to about 10MB of data usage, enough to view about 200 emails or 80 web pages.

Can I exceed these spend caps?

When you reach a spend cap, you can still extend past it - you simply need to text a command to a Short Code.

Instructions for this are outlined below, and are also sent to you in both text notifications you receive when abroad.

To extend past the €50 spend cap:

Text ‘PASS EU CAP’ to 50193.

To extend past the €300 spend cap:

  • Text ‘PASS UPPER LIMIT <PIN>  ’ to 50193
  • The PIN you need to insert is the last 4 digits of your customer number
  • If you are not the bill payer, the PIN can be sourced from them along with their approval to continue spending

If you extend past the spend cap, your usage beyond the spend cap will continue to be charged according to your price plan.

Can I opt out of spend caps & notifications completely?

You can choose to opt out of the spend caps entirely - however, we do not recommend this as these controls are for your benefit. If at any stage in the future you wish to opt for the €50 spend cap the other terms and conditions of your data roaming plan will not be affected and there will be no penalty or restriction involved.

To opt out:

For the €50 spend cap:

  • Text ‘NO EU CAP’ TO 50193

For the €300 spend cap:

  • Text ‘NO UPPER LIMIT <PIN>  ’ to 50193
  • The PIN you need to insert is the last 4 digits of your customer number

For spend notifications:

  • Text ‘NO NOTIFY’ to 50193.

To opt back in:

For the €50 spend cap:

  • Text ‘YES EU CAP’ TO 50193

For the €300 spend cap:

  • Text ‘YES UPPER LIMIT’ to 50193

For spend notifications:

  • Text ‘YES NOTIFY’ to 50193
