Vodafone Ireland Foundation (VIF) was established in 2003 and is the first foundation of its kind in Ireland. We are one of 23 Vodafone Foundations around the world -- making us part of Vodafone's global commitment to being a responsible corporate citizen and member of society.
VIF began as a foundation to support any Irish-based charity. In our first three years in existence, we funded 105 projects and spent a total of €2.3m.
Recently, following a review of our strategy, we've decided to narrow our focus and to prioritise our funding towards charities that help children, young people and their families facing adversity in their lives.
VIF is motivated by the principle of "a hand up, not a hand out". To follow that principle, we award grants every year to programmes or projects that help young people, children and their families.
The charities we support must hold a CHY number with the Irish Revenue Commissioners, and their projects must improve the lives of children and young people and their families who are affected by economic, geographic, educational or social disadvantage. The people VIF helps may include children growing up in care, the "new" Irish, unaccompanied minors, traveller children, children in lone parent families, those living with special needs or growing up in poverty.
We are aware that there are many organisations currently carrying out effective, innovative and dynamic interventions to improve the lives of children, young people and their families. These are the organisations we seek to support.
We launched our World of Difference programme in January 2007. The programme offers up to four Irish residents the opportunity to work with a charity of their choice in Ireland by providing them with a year's salary (up to a maximum of €40,000 plus expenses). The World of Difference project has been very successful in our sister Vodafone Foundations in Australia, New Zealand and Netherlands, and we look forward to replicating that success here.
